First time here? Let’s review what we’re doing. Or attempting to do. Preaching without being preachy. Generally letting you know where to buy the cool shit that also does good shit, for the environment, people. You know the conscious drill. And we were thinking, whilst we’re online, there’s still brave folks out there in the world of brick and mortar. Not only are they braving the real world, but they’re making it better by flogging stuff that’s much better for the real world than your average, well, Forever 21 and what not.
To honor these brave souls we have this foncy series. Conscious IRL. Neighborhood guides for shopping (and eating and drinking) consciously. For the second part in this series we’re tackling Highland Park in Los Angeles. A burgeoning neighborhood walking that fine line between over-gentrification and being authentically L.A. Here are our favourite spots.
I’m focusing this guide on two walkable areas of Highland Park, York Blvd and Figueroa Street. Let’s kick things off with York!
Weepah Way is an adorable little store stocking a highly curated vintage selection. Heavy on the denim and gauzy cotton aesthetic she has a great range of goodies and a really pleasant shopping experience.
Conscious Labels: Vintage

Possession Vintage and Honeywood
These neighboring stores each have their own distinctive aesthetic. Honeywood is the perfect resource for the urban but occasional desert dwelling cowgirl. Think prairie dresses boots and to die for carpet bags both vintage and locally made goodies.
Conscious Labels: Totally Blown, own label, vintage, local, handmade.
Where: 5117 York Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 9004
Possession Vintage is home to an impressive collection of vintage goodies, and is especially 60’s leaning. It’s also highly curated, you won’t find any junk here, all good stuff at great prices.
Conscious Labels: Vintage
Where: 5119 York Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90042
Dotter is my “I’m a 65 year old ceramic artist” aesthetic store of my dreams. Lots of floaty linens and cottons and made in the US goodies. The store also has some gorgeous jewelry, fab home goodies and a great kids section.
Conscious Labels: Flax, Bryn Walker, Niche and Cutloose
Where: 5027 York Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90042
Social Study has a great mix of clothing, accessories, home goods, jewelry and beauty products. Not all of the clothing options are eco or ethical so pay attention – but the jewelry and skincare are mostly local and/or handmade.

Sonomama is probably my personal favorite store in the Highland Park area. The store is home to some great collections, including Austin based Esby and my favourite natural products Fat and the Moon. It’s hippie without the granola without being “yippie” (yuppy/hippie). I could do (and have done) some serious shopping here.
